Portola Discovery Site of San Francisco

V. Fontana & Co. was commissioned in 1976 during the Bicentennial to mark the spot of the discovery of the San Francisco Bay. The stone selected was natural and indigenous from California and named Jasper.
The engraved plaque area, exclusive of V. Fontana & Co., is actually a part of the entire rock. The plaque area is machine finished smooth; the surface behind it is then chiseled and blasted back approximately 3/8". The plaque is now raised and it appears to be set into the stone, when in actuality, it is part of the stone. The is the most durable type of dedication/plaque available. This stone can be seen on top of Sweeney Ridge in the San Bruno area overlooking San Francisco Bay.
