Large multi-ton blocks of silica quartz glass, these
ingots are made in Cleveland, Ohio and England. These are
used in the production of silicon wafer chips in the computer
industry. Sent directly to V. Fontana & Company, these
quartz pieces are then cut and surfaced in
the production process. The initial raw quartz ingot, too
heavy and unwieldy, are handled at Fontana's factory in
much the same way as granite blocks are. Placed under a
large wiresaw capable of making a cut 5' tall x 14' long, they
are sliced to specific thicknesses. The cut pieces are then
moved to the surfacing machine and lapped to a smooth
finish.
