Submarine Monument
Work on the World War II Submarine Memorial began in fall 2007. Though complications and delays arose during the process, the memorial was finally installed in May 2010. Situated at Pier 45, adjacent to the WWII USS Pampanito and an authentic WWII torpedo, the Lost Boat Memorial is 48“ wide x 54“ tall x 6“ thick and made of Dark Diamond Grey Granite. An elevated plaque area on the face of the memorial contains the names of the fifty-two submarines sunk during WWII. This tribute honors the sacrifice of 3,500 submariners lost during the war. As the lower granite base indicates, these submarines are on “eternal patrol.“
