The United Nation's Plaza Disc was custom made for the 60th Anniversary of the United Nations
and Earth Day, which was celebrated in San Francisco, the week of June 6, 2005. The disc was
entirely fabricated at the V. Fontana & Co. local plant in Colma, California.
The granite was cut from a large block of Sierra White Granite to approximately seven and a
half square feet and three inches thick. It was placed on the surfacing machine (plain surface polisher)
and surfaced to a six hundred grid consistency which gave the surface a level area. The disc
was then designed and laid out with the lettering. All the design work and lettering was transposed
from full size art work onto the stencil by hand and then cut by hand. The disc was then brought to an
outside area and sandblasted with medium pressure and low sand to ensure clear engraving. A dark shadow
die was then applied to all areas; darker in the letters, lighter in the building and street area.
The entire unit was then completely finished and prepared for installation.
