Designed and manufactured entirely at our factory, it was installed by our personnel at the Marin County Civic Center, 10 miles north of San Francisco.
This is the main WWII Monument for the entire state of California. It is constructed entirely of Cold Spring Granite. The cap piece, the main monument and three bases, are of Sierra White Granite, with two in-laid plaques of 1-1/4" Academy, recessed into the front area. The five logos, made of bas-relief and gold leaf, represent the five military branches of the service. The words, "TO ALL WHO SERVED", is inclusive of everybody who served our country during the war.
This entire project was undertaken by veterans and their spouses, all between their late 70's and 80's. Raising $100,000 from donations that literally came from around the state, they were truly representative of the greatest generation entirely focused on this, their last mission.
Elio A. Fontana, who designed the WWII Memorial, was a Sergeant attached to the U.S. 9th Army, which fought in northwest Europe and was part of the relief of Bastone in the Battle of the Bulge.
It was an incredible experience, not just the memorial itself, but our involvement with the wonderful folks who were responsible for it. The monument itself and to be part of what it represents is a source of pride for all of us.
